HOME Overview
HIPEC is a Hyperthermic Interperitoneal Chemotherapy which is highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy which is given to the abdomen during the surgery. HIPEC chemotherapy circulates throughout the body and this treatment directly targets the cancer cells in abdomen. The term “Interperitoneal” means the treatment is given in the abdominal cavity. Hence this HIPEC treatment is given in the abdominal cavity.
How Does HIPEC treatment work?
Before patient starts getting HIPEC treatment, a cytoreductive surgery is done to remove the visible tumors within the abdomen. Once the tumors are removed, HIPEC treatment is given to the patient.
During HIPEC treatment, surgeon will continuously circulate a heated sterile solution – containing chemotherapeutic agent throughout the peritoneal cavity. The solution is 41 to 42 degrees Celsius. It is circulated throughout the abdomen for approx 2 hours. Then the solution is drained from the abdomen and the incision is closed.
HIPEC treatment is designed to attempt to kill any remaining cancer cells. This treatment option is for patients who have advanced surface spread of cancer within the abdomen. This treatment also improves medicines effect on the body.
