Chemo Port
Overview
A chemo port is a small medical tool which is installed underneath the skin to access the bloodstream. A catheter connects the port to vein. Under the skin, the port has a septum through which medicines can be injected and blood samples can be drawn many times.
Without port, a new IV needle will need to be placed each time a patient has chemotherapy.
A port is inserted during the same-day surgical procedure. Usually a port is inserted a week before beginning of chemotherapy to avoid the risk for complications of breast cancer. Surgeon inserts the chemo port at the same time your surgery is performed.
During insertion, a small round metal or plastic disc is placed under the skin. This may be located on the upper chest or in the upper arm. This port is then attached to catheter tube that is threaded into one of the large veins near your neck and ends near the top of the patient’s heart. After the port is placed an X-ray is done to make sure the end of the port is in the proper location.
Advantages of Chemo Port:
- Comfort: As a single needle stick is used for blood transfusions every time. So there is no need to insert new IV everytime.
- Lowering the risk of leakage: when an IV is used, medications are more likely to leak into the tissues surrounding the patient’s hand or arm.
Patient can take bath easily even with the inserted chemo port. As it is completely under the skin, the risk of infection is reduced to much extent.
After the completion of procedure the port is removed by simple surgical procedure.
