The patient, Sharad Tandel, had visited a doctor for treatment of a mouth ulcer, which turned our to be high grade oral cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-operative tests revealed that he had four major blockages and his heart\u2019s pumping rate had dropped to a mere 20%. Given that both his health conditions required immediate intervention, a team of doctors carried out a heart and cancer surgery one after other.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Tandel, a driver who lives in Mahul\u2019s Ambada village, went into surgery on September 27. Doctors said he had been a tobacco chewer since the last decade. \u201cWe first took him in for the bypass surgery. While the conventional bypass surgery takes more time, we carried out a beating heart procedure to reduce the duration and blood loss,\u201d said cardiac surgeon Dr. Partha Sarathi, who operated on Mr. Tandel at the Surana Hospital in Chembur.<\/p>\n<p>According to the doctor, in a beating heart procedure, the patient is not put on a heart lung machine. He said attending to the patient\u2019s oral cancer first would have put him at the risk of a heart attack as all his blockages were above 80%. Attending to his cardiac problem first would mean allowing the cancer in his mouth spread further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter an overall evaluation, we decided to carry out the surgeries in phases, one after another,\u201d surgical oncologist Dr. Amit Chakraborty said. \u201cThe cancer surgery involved removal of a part of the upper jaw and glands in the neck,\u201d he said, adding that the procedures were carried out in shortest possible time, each requiring about four hours.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest risk involved was blood loss, but the teams managed the procedures without any transfusion. Another risk was that the patient could go into a cardiac arrest as his heart was already in a compromised condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe explained to the patient and his family every aspect of the procedure and both the surgical teams put in a well coordinated effort,\u201d said Dr. Prince Surana, director, Surana Group Of Hospitals. He said the hospital raised \u20b93 lakh for the procedures while the patient\u2019s family raised the remaining \u20b93 lakh. \u201cWe will be discharging him within a day or two. He will require radiation and may also require chemotherapy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Tandel\u2019s brother, Laxman, said he had undergone an angioplasty in 2015. \u201cWe did not expect that along with the cancer, he will have to undergo such a major heart procedure.
